Dr. Joseph Jacob Panikulam is a General Psychiatrist with 23 years of experience in the clinical, academic, and humanitarian spheres of psychiatry. He obtained his MBBS from Mangalore University in 1990 and his Masters in Psychological Medicine from the University of Malaya in 2003. He completed four years of compulsory public service, including three years with a psychiatric hospital, followed by approximately four years as a General Practitioner. He then served with the University of Malaya for ten years, including five years as a Clinical Specialist.

He subsequently spent three years in Jordan as a Mental Health Coordinator with the International Medical Corps, an international NGO. His role involved designing, coordinating, and conducting mental health services for displaced Iraqis, as well as training doctors, nurses, and volunteer workers. He was later contracted by Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) to conduct an assessment of psychiatric services in Iraq during the Second Gulf War and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Upon returning to Malaysia, he joined Penang Medical College and later Taylor’s University as a Senior Lecturer. Concurrently, he worked as a Psychiatrist in various hospitals and clinics. He has been actively involved with the Catholic Doctors Association of Malaysia for many years, serving two years as President and holding various other positions on the executive committee.

He has also delivered numerous talks and workshops for the public and medical community. His special areas of interest in psychiatry include Psychotherapy, Autism and ADHD, and Mental Health in Primary Care.
