Dr Sasitharan Moorthi is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Addiction Psychiatrist with specialised training and extensive clinical experience in general psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, substance use disorders and behavioural addictions. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Malaya and subsequently completed his Master of Psychological Medicine (MPM) at the same university. He further developed his expertise through fellowship training in Addiction Psychiatry at Turning Point in Melbourne, Australia, and is also a Certified Medical Impairment Assessor (CMIA) through Malaysia’s National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
Dr Sasitharan has experience in the assessment and management of a broad range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), sleep disorders and sexual disorders.
A significant area of his clinical interest is addiction psychiatry. His work encompasses substance use disorders, opioid dependence and substitution therapy, as well as behavioural addictions such as problematic gambling and gaming. He has also contributed his professional expertise to the development of Malaysia’s Management Guidelines of Behavioural Addiction and has participated in professional psychiatric conferences addressing substance dependence and emerging challenges in addiction treatment.
Dr Sasitharan takes a patient-centred and evidence-based approach to mental healthcare, recognising that psychiatric and addiction-related conditions can affect not only an individual’s emotional well-being but also their relationships, family life, work and overall quality of life.
His combination of general psychiatric expertise and specialised knowledge in addiction and behavioural disorders enables him to support individuals experiencing both common and complex mental health concerns.
Dr Sasitharan is fluent in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Tamil, enabling him to communicate effectively and provide care to patients from diverse backgrounds.
