The Problem

The Silent Epidemic

Many adults don't realise how crippling stress can be for can be for teenagers. Studies have uncovered the growing levels of mental-health-related issues in our youngsters. WHO reported:

26.9%

children in the age group of 13-15 years in Malaysia suffer from depression

11.1%

children aged 5 to 15 years in Malaysia experience mental health problems, which include anxiety disorders

10%

of adolescents aged 13–17 reported thinking about suicide.

29%

of adolescents showed signs of internet addiction.
The Challenges

Difficulties in Accessing Care

There are many barriers to accessing mentalhealth care. These include stigma, embarrassment, concerns about privacy, lack of mental health literacy and awareness regarding symptoms and early warning signs and lack of teen-friendly interventions.
In addition, there is an acute shortage of psychiatrists and clinical psychologists. According to reports, there is only One Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist for each 100,000 population in Malaysia. Anxiety and depression are treatable, but most kids with a diagnosable anxiety disorder and depression are not getting the desperately needed treatment.

Adolescence is the Golden Period for Mental Health Care and Intervention

Mental health practitioners worldwide have recognised that the golden period for any intervention is during adolescence. This is because earlier intervention in adolescents could prevent and reverse any mental health problems from taking hold and result in long-lasting positive life outcomes.
