Mental health problems exist along a continuum from mild, time-limited distress (grief due to loss) to common mental illness (anxiety) and chronic, progressive, and severely disabling conditions (schizophrenia). Therefore, accessing mental health care is important at every stage of life, from childhood through adulthood, as it can profoundly affect daily life, relationships, and physical health.
The presence of depression/anxiety prospectively predicts the incidence of serious disorders like diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and coronary artery disease. This makes the management of the chronic disorders challenging. As a result, mental illness not only aggravates any condition but consequently increases the mortality risks.
